Ever thought about packing up over a dozen teens and taking them on a bus tour of Community of Christ congregations? Well, GPNW has been doing that for decades! Today we're talking about Caravan and how it is helping bring the identity, message, mission, and beliefs of Community of Christ alive to today's youth.

00:00:15.960 --> 00:00:15.960
[inaudible].

00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:19.980
Welcome to the Project Zion podcast.

00:00:20.250 --> 00:00:27.570
This podcast explores the unique spiritual and theological gifts Community of Christ offers for today's world.

00:00:34.070 --> 00:00:34.969
Hello everyone.

00:00:34.970 --> 00:00:38.090
This is Brittany Mangelson with the Project Zion Podcast.

00:00:38.119 --> 00:00:44.509
And today we're going to be having an episode in our What's Brewing series, which is all about mission.

00:00:44.929 --> 00:00:58.869
And I am delighted to have our guest on, this is Jody Barnhart and she and her husband, along with other leaders in the Pacific Northwest do a youth caravan.

00:00:58.990 --> 00:01:04.390
And we had the opportunity to have them come through Salt Lake a couple of years ago.

00:01:04.391 --> 00:01:08.799
And ever since then I've wanted to get them on to talk about caravan.

00:01:09.219 --> 00:01:10.599
So we finally did it.

00:01:10.780 --> 00:01:11.650
I'm excited.

00:01:11.650 --> 00:01:13.450
So Jody, welcome.

00:01:13.450 --> 00:01:15.099
And why don't you introduce yourself a little bit?

00:01:16.189 --> 00:01:19.159
So I'm Jody Barnhart, I'm actually convert to the church.

00:01:19.219 --> 00:01:21.500
I joined the church through my husband.

00:01:22.129 --> 00:01:25.760
Um, we started caravan in 1991 as staff.

00:01:26.090 --> 00:01:33.109
My husband's job was just to keep the vans running and I was in charge of games and recreation.

00:01:33.469 --> 00:01:37.310
And since then we've been directing off and on for over 20 years.

00:01:37.799 --> 00:01:38.909
That is awesome.

00:01:39.269 --> 00:01:46.650
So Caravan was not a tradition that I was necessarily used to or familiar with I guess when I joined Community of Christ.

00:01:47.069 --> 00:01:52.200
So for those people who have no idea what we're talking about, why don't you give us an idea?

00:01:52.200 --> 00:01:53.640
What is caravan?

00:01:54.519 --> 00:01:55.810
Caravan is?

00:01:56.230 --> 00:01:58.420
Um, it's for the high school youth.

00:01:59.019 --> 00:02:05.859
We invite them to come to five huddles and we ask them to come to each of the huddles because we work on a program.

00:02:05.861 --> 00:02:07.329
We work on community service.

00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:16.479
There's requirements that they have to do, they have to go on home visits, they have to learn about the area that we're going to.

00:02:16.539 --> 00:02:20.560
My husband does a lot of prayer and discernment about where we're going.

00:02:20.860 --> 00:02:26.289
And Ron Harman actually nudged us to go to Salt Lake a few years ago and we're really glad we did.

00:02:26.680 --> 00:02:29.050
And so we have these huddles.

00:02:29.620 --> 00:02:34.090
We have anywhere from 45 kids to 16 kids to nine kids.

00:02:34.210 --> 00:02:39.610
It just depends on the year and the baby booms and the baby boom myths and all that stuff.

00:02:39.610 --> 00:02:51.439
So, and then we um, go on the week trip and I'm doing the week trip, we put on a program, a church type program, but it's very user friendly so you can invite your friends.

00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:58.759
We focus lately on the mission initiatives and then during the day we either do something fun or we do community service.

00:02:59.110 --> 00:03:02.919
We've worked with Catholic community services a couple of different times.

00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:04.569
We work at food banks.

00:03:04.570 --> 00:03:08.680
We help um, roof a house for Habitat for Humanity.

00:03:09.250 --> 00:03:11.889
We worked at the Boys and Girls Club.

00:03:12.599 --> 00:03:16.879
We've just done numerous, numerous community services projects.

00:03:16.881 --> 00:03:24.909
We try to do two to three to four during our week trip and this year we're going to Canada.

00:03:25.389 --> 00:03:34.310
And so I have, I'm scheduled to do community service in Crystal Springs and Chiliwack and Vancouver and Victoria.

00:03:35.009 --> 00:03:36.780
So the kids get a trip.

00:03:37.250 --> 00:03:44.069
But they also, um, developing disciples to serve as kind of Troy and I's main focus.

00:03:44.340 --> 00:03:49.930
We really want to develop these disciples to serve and provide mission, um, mission.

00:03:49.931 --> 00:03:59.960
And, um, our slogan is mission made real and we feel like making mission made real in the lives of these youth, and we just really enjoy doing it.

00:04:00.020 --> 00:04:03.250
And we feel a lot of reward when we do that.

00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:06.189
We have a lot of our youth who have become pastors.

00:04:06.580 --> 00:04:14.409
Carolyn Brock was the first caravaner from Southern Oregon, so that's kind of our namesake.

00:04:14.830 --> 00:04:24.319
It started in Seattle and then we, um, got the[inaudible] the bug in Southern Oregon and then we became a mission center—the Greater Pacific Northwest Mission Center.

00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:30.829
So we have kids all the way from almost the Canadian border as far as the the California border.

00:04:31.160 --> 00:04:34.800
And they meet once a month and they come from wherever they are.

00:04:35.240 --> 00:04:41.480
And, we practice, we have fun, we do community service, and then we just, we just bond.

00:04:41.480 --> 00:04:46.720
But we really strive to develop leaders and developing disciples to serve.

00:04:48.339 --> 00:04:51.250
So Jody, you mentioned the word huddle.

00:04:51.639 --> 00:04:52.720
I'm curious what that is.

00:04:52.721 --> 00:05:01.750
Are those the meetings before you go on caravan or are those your little spots that you're traveling to or what are those huddles are?

00:05:02.079 --> 00:05:04.720
We have five huddles in our mission center.

00:05:05.319 --> 00:05:10.750
And the huddles, like the first one that we're going to, I don't know why they're called huddles.

00:05:10.779 --> 00:05:25.160
They, that just became, I call them retreats or get togethers or whatever, but they're they're where the kids, they show up Saturday morning at nine o'clock and they're there until Sunday, you know, one o'clock after potluck.

00:05:25.170 --> 00:05:31.790
So Saturday we come, we do registration, we do some fun games, we do some activities, we get the program.

00:05:32.180 --> 00:05:52.579
Travis Reese wrote the program and it's about the mission initiatives and it's called the Avengers, kind of a spin off of the Avengers, but as the evangelists and then we practice the program and then Sunday morning we do the Sunday morning program and then they provide potluck for us usually and stuff.

00:05:53.149 --> 00:06:06.459
But I'm glad you asked what caravan is about because when we planned the trip and we plan where we're going, some people have the congregations go,"Well what's Caravan and what are they doing?

00:06:06.461 --> 00:06:12.730
And we have to feed them Paula and what are they going to do?" And so they don't know quite really what caravan is.

00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:17.860
And really what it is is a bunch of high school disciples wanting to serve God.

00:06:18.670 --> 00:06:20.350
I absolutely love this.

00:06:20.350 --> 00:06:27.819
And I have to say that when you did travel through Salt Lake, not only did you supply my girls with two Mission Made Real sweatshirts.

00:06:27.821 --> 00:06:39.459
So they're all over Facebook in their Mission Made Real sweatshirts because they wear them pretty much every single day between the months of oh, September and March here in Utah.

00:06:40.329 --> 00:06:49.870
But also that first time you came to Salt Lake, that was the first date of a now married couple in the Salt Lake congregation.

00:06:50.290 --> 00:06:53.500
So a lot of fun things can happen at caravan apparently.

00:06:54.519 --> 00:06:55.480
Well, yes.

00:06:55.660 --> 00:06:59.129
And you know, we, we borrowed your car to take a kid to the doctor.

00:06:59.130 --> 00:06:59.889
Do you remember that?

00:07:01.149 --> 00:07:13.750
The campfire and I hear the campfire was just amazing that the car, not only the congregation but the people that were in the hammocks in your park got involved in the, in the campfire.

00:07:13.959 --> 00:07:28.209
And that's really what we want to do when we go to, especially like when we go to these community services projects, we sometimes work alongside people that are, um, necessarily having to do community service, you know, so we get to visit with them.

00:07:28.211 --> 00:07:31.060
We get to tell them what we're about, what we're doing and stuff.

00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:34.269
And it really becomes a bonding time and stuff.

00:07:34.271 --> 00:07:35.410
So we really enjoy that.

00:07:35.470 --> 00:07:40.899
The community service part, that's my favorite thing is, is planning the community outreach.

00:07:41.560 --> 00:07:46.300
One place in Idaho, Idaho Falls, we literally divided the group into three different groups.

00:07:46.779 --> 00:07:55.620
The young ones, I call them the young ones, the ones under 16 went to one food bank where you actually got script and you got to shop.

00:07:56.009 --> 00:08:01.490
So really, you know, valued the dignity of the person, you know, so many points was this.

00:08:01.490 --> 00:08:16.240
So many points was that, and they got to shop and then one of the groups went to the Boys and Girls Club and then one of the older groups went to the Habitat for Humanity where they actually were putting on a roof of a house and with the homeowner.

00:08:16.300 --> 00:08:21.879
So that was really cool, you know, and the bus drops us off and then we all get together again.

00:08:23.649 --> 00:08:29.879
I absolutely love the way that you weave Community of Christ's identity into the local communities.

00:08:29.880 --> 00:08:34.629
So it's not an insular, um, let's just rah rah, rah the church.

00:08:34.630 --> 00:08:38.679
It's that you are getting out and doing mission in the community.

00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:39.539
Yes.

00:08:39.750 --> 00:08:48.570
For instance, like last year we went to Laguna Beach and we didn't have a church in Laguna Beach and Costa Mesa's was the closest one and it had closed.

00:08:48.840 --> 00:08:52.230
So we stayed in a Unitarian church in Laguna Beach.

00:08:52.950 --> 00:08:59.100
We slept there so that the kids could have some opportunity in Laguna Beach and we fed the homeless in Laguna Beach.

00:08:59.429 --> 00:09:20.289
And so, um, this year when we go to Victoria, Victoria has been a little bit concerned, um, because they, um, they don't have a big congregation and so we're thinking of trying to get a nondenominational congregation to come with them or maybe go to that congregation and put the program on.

00:09:20.659 --> 00:09:23.240
But we, we just thoroughly love it.

00:09:23.330 --> 00:09:24.889
It just gives us a lot of joy.

00:09:25.940 --> 00:09:28.549
Um, we feel like we're doing the mission of the church.

00:09:29.480 --> 00:09:32.240
Um, all of the five mission initiatives we hit.

00:09:32.730 --> 00:09:38.539
About four or five years ago, we focused on the enduring principles and that really stuck with the kids.

00:09:38.929 --> 00:09:45.289
You know, they still now, okay, maybe we should wash the dishes and not use paper plates and you know, Sacredness of Creation.

00:09:45.529 --> 00:09:50.149
And so they just really focus in on what the church is, is all about.

00:09:51.769 --> 00:09:55.340
Yeah, it makes, I mean your slogan Mission Made Real.

00:09:55.341 --> 00:09:57.720
It makes the church become real.

00:09:57.721 --> 00:09:59.009
It makes it relevant.

00:09:59.730 --> 00:10:14.250
I mean the church is relevant even if you're not doing Caravan, but it gives these students, these kids very tangible hands on experiences that we're not just preaching these things from the pulpit, but they actually have real life applicability.

00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:18.090
And I think that that's probably such an empowering thing for them to see.

00:10:19.190 --> 00:10:20.629
Oh, it's very empowering.

00:10:20.630 --> 00:10:26.090
I can't tell you the lives we've had, we had one caravaner—this is kind of a funny story.

00:10:26.091 --> 00:10:28.580
We had one caravaner at the first huddle.

00:10:28.730 --> 00:10:29.600
My dad calls them Huggies.

00:10:29.600 --> 00:10:37.610
But the first huddle we had at Roseburg congregation, and she was like forced to come.

00:10:38.220 --> 00:10:39.360
She was crying.

00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:40.889
She did not want to come.

00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:45.960
Her mother was, had been a caravaner, you know, so we're dealing with three generations of caravaners.

00:10:46.289 --> 00:10:48.059
And so she made her come to the huddle.

00:10:48.570 --> 00:10:55.269
Well she ended up marrying another caravaner just this last summer, she went on the caravan for four years.

00:10:55.270 --> 00:10:56.590
They went to Graceland.

00:10:57.399 --> 00:10:59.289
Um, she's a priest in the church.

00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:24.940
I mean this is a girl that had to be drugged by her hair to the first huddle and you know, just stories like that, uh, just the bonding that the kids get to do, but also, you know, them realizing that they could go back to their home congregation and some of them don't have a home congregation, which is kind of sad, but they can go back into their communities and they can serve God in their communities by doing community service.

00:11:25.059 --> 00:11:34.230
You know, this particular trip, cause we're getting, you know, kids are saying, I'm going to bring my friend, I'm going to, I'm going to bring my foreign exchange student and stuff.

00:11:34.440 --> 00:11:41.220
So we're getting a lot of kids that are non church non- Community of Christ kids coming on the Caravan, which is wonderful.

00:11:41.610 --> 00:12:07.889
Um, another really great story that I have, and this was, this was probably one of my highlights of Caravan ws um, I don't know, five, six years ago we went to Montana and one of our staff members wasn't a member of the church and his wife has Shanie Benedict said,"Ken may want to be baptized on the trip, but he doesn't want to be baptized in a font but in like a river or lake or something.

00:12:07.890 --> 00:12:13.679
And because we're going to Montana, that would be a great thing to do." So we're going through Montana, I'm looking at exit number 213.

00:12:14.519 --> 00:12:15.269
That's a great river.

00:12:15.270 --> 00:12:16.169
We get down there.

00:12:16.470 --> 00:12:19.049
You know, I'm thinking of this, you know, like for about three days.

00:12:19.350 --> 00:12:27.639
And then we go to a water park in Kellogg, Idaho that has a bicycle, mountain biking trail to go down on.

00:12:27.640 --> 00:12:31.539
And all the kids went in the water park and Ken asked if he could go mountain biking.

00:12:31.541 --> 00:12:34.480
Well, we knew he's a great mountain biker, so we let him go.

00:12:35.139 --> 00:12:43.269
So we get on the bus, I'm the last one on the bus and he goes, Jody, do you know if there's a creek, a river or lake close by to the church?

00:12:43.270 --> 00:12:48.759
And I go say Sagle has a shower, cause I'm thinking he didn't get a shower.

00:12:48.760 --> 00:12:49.059
Right.

00:12:49.061 --> 00:12:54.129
He spent all this time, you know, mountain biking, he's stinky, dirty and everything.

00:12:54.130 --> 00:12:57.519
And he goes, I don't really want to get baptized in the shower.

00:12:58.659 --> 00:12:59.950
And I just totally freaked out.

00:12:59.980 --> 00:13:01.389
I was so excited.

00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:13.350
We pulled into Segal, I got the pastor, pastor and Ken went and looked at this beautiful Lake and the next morning we had this beautiful baptism and it was just, I mean it still brings tears to my eyes.

00:13:13.350 --> 00:13:16.299
I mean it was just, it was over the top.

00:13:16.360 --> 00:13:19.000
I mean it was just one of those things that you'll never forget.

00:13:19.240 --> 00:13:28.070
We've had'em baptisms at our final program when we usually end typically in Eugene, because it's kind of the center of our hub.

00:13:28.789 --> 00:13:39.159
And we've had kids be baptized and confirmed in the same, we've had our, our service and then we snuck in a baptism and a confirmation.

00:13:39.519 --> 00:13:44.799
So, you know, it's just bringing kids to Christ and making Mission Made Real in their lives.

00:13:45.809 --> 00:13:47.009
I absolutely love that.

00:13:47.010 --> 00:13:57.450
And what a cool example for the kids to see one of their leaders turn around and say, yeah, I do want to be part of this mission and make it official by baptism.

00:13:57.480 --> 00:13:58.379
That's really cool.

00:13:57.931 --> 00:13:58.379
Really cool.

00:13:58.759 --> 00:14:02.120
It was, it was the, the Lake was beautiful.

00:14:02.120 --> 00:14:09.289
You could just, um, you could just see the reflection of all the kids on the dock, on the Lake and it was just gorgeous.

00:14:09.649 --> 00:14:10.129
Yeah.

00:14:11.299 --> 00:14:22.370
So Jody, I'm a little bit curious because I've heard when I've asked or when Caravans just come up in general conversations, I know that there's other mission centers and other areas that have done Caravan.

00:14:22.370 --> 00:14:30.320
Maybe they'll go on a church history trip or back East, you know, a US history trip or something or just different places where community service can happen.

00:14:30.710 --> 00:14:34.429
But I'm wondering about the specific caravan in your area.

00:14:34.431 --> 00:14:35.960
How long has it been going?

00:14:35.961 --> 00:14:39.529
'Cause it seems to be that it's been going decades and decades and decades and decades.

00:14:39.530 --> 00:14:40.340
Is that correct?

00:14:40.929 --> 00:14:41.590
Yes.

00:14:41.860 --> 00:14:42.730
Seattle.

00:14:42.759 --> 00:14:43.990
Seattle had a caravan.

00:14:43.990 --> 00:14:47.110
So this is when we were stakes and districts and all that kind of good stuff.

00:14:47.350 --> 00:14:59.070
Seattle had a caravan, the Irbys, and they came down to Southern Oregon and Tom and Jean Kaufman that has since passed and the Irbys have since passed, um, said, Hey, I want that for our kids.

00:14:59.460 --> 00:15:04.529
So that was about 1966 we started in Southern Oregon, the caravan.

00:15:04.769 --> 00:15:10.259
And so we had a caravan since 1966 out of the Southern Oregon.

00:15:10.260 --> 00:15:13.529
Now it's the GPNW the Greater Pacific Northwest Mission Center.

00:15:13.950 --> 00:15:14.730
So we've had it.

00:15:15.029 --> 00:15:21.389
So Troy and I, um, personally are seeing kids of kids that were on caravan.

00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:31.409
So, or you know, staff members', kids or, um, you know, we haven't got the three generation yet, but we've got the two generations.

00:15:31.410 --> 00:15:32.190
We've had kids.

00:15:32.940 --> 00:15:42.450
When, when Troy and I first started the Caravan in 91, when we first went on staff, we had, um, the Kings, the King boys, and now we have their children.

00:15:43.769 --> 00:15:47.669
So, you know, it's been going quite and we wanted to continue to go.

00:15:48.240 --> 00:15:57.299
Um, I kind of tried to put a history book together of you know, where we've been and where we, what we did, you know, itineraries and stuff like that.

00:15:57.301 --> 00:16:03.870
And you know, we do evaluations at the end of the year so that the kids can evaluate what went well, what didn't go well.

00:16:04.139 --> 00:16:15.679
We also started about four years ago what we call a leadership group, so they have to apply to be on the leadership team and it's sophomores, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

00:16:15.889 --> 00:16:18.049
There'll be sophomores, juniors and seniors the next year.

00:16:18.051 --> 00:16:26.230
We have a retreat and they get to make some decisions like on some of the fun things that we're going to do on some of the community service projects that we're going to do.

00:16:26.620 --> 00:16:31.090
They get to of course pick out the color of the sweatshirts and the color of the t-shirt.

00:16:31.840 --> 00:16:38.960
And then if we have like an issue or something that comes up, we, okay now should we do this or this?

00:16:39.049 --> 00:16:40.669
And they get to make those decisions.

00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:45.559
And so some of them are on the team for three years and some of them are on the team for two years.

00:16:45.830 --> 00:16:47.269
And that's really been helpful.

00:16:48.830 --> 00:16:49.070
Yeah.

00:16:49.071 --> 00:16:58.850
Because then you're getting feedback from the youth and then they're getting a lot of leadership opportunity to form and shape what their experience is going to look like.

00:16:58.850 --> 00:17:01.279
And then I'm sure that they get more excited about it.

00:17:01.280 --> 00:17:07.440
So with the younger kids, you know, there's that mentor peer relationship that probably develops, I'm assuming.

00:17:07.441 --> 00:17:08.549
And ya.

00:17:08.680 --> 00:17:09.130
Yes.

00:17:09.131 --> 00:17:10.119
That works really well.

00:17:10.329 --> 00:17:16.210
And when you ask about like the history, I also like to talk about the discernment of how we decide where we're going.

00:17:16.509 --> 00:17:20.680
We don't just, we don't just put a map out and throw a dart at the map.

00:17:21.099 --> 00:17:29.049
My husband does a lot of prayer and fasting about where to go and he feels real led to go someplace like Hagerman Idaho.

00:17:30.740 --> 00:17:36.940
We love to put Hagerman Idaho on the map and we have fun too.

00:17:37.329 --> 00:17:42.410
Uh, he said, I want to go, I want to go back to Hagerman and Buhl and New Plymouth and stuff like that.

00:17:42.411 --> 00:17:46.579
So we went and, um, and I said, well honey, why do you want to go there?

00:17:47.069 --> 00:17:47.940
I just want to go there.

00:17:48.339 --> 00:17:49.900
He was like, you know, I really want to go there.

00:17:50.140 --> 00:17:53.269
Well, he was real concerned about the pastor and his health.

00:17:54.369 --> 00:17:56.470
And so that's why he focused there.

00:17:56.769 --> 00:17:59.500
One year we went to Pocatello, Idaho.

00:17:59.799 --> 00:18:03.910
And last year when we went to Salt Lake, he said, we've got to stop at Pocatello again.

00:18:04.180 --> 00:18:05.380
They were just great.

00:18:06.190 --> 00:18:13.599
Um, you know, and this year we, um, he decided to go to Canada and we usually have an idea where we're going next year by this time.

00:18:13.930 --> 00:18:17.279
And we haven't, we haven't finalized that yet.

00:18:17.289 --> 00:18:18.549
We're still in the process.

00:18:18.550 --> 00:18:27.009
So people that are listening to this podcast, if you want to host the Caravan, I'm sure you could get ahold of Brittany and Brittany can get ahold of us.

00:18:27.700 --> 00:18:31.150
Because we're still in the process of discerning where we're going next year.

00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:32.400
It's true.

00:18:32.401 --> 00:18:41.640
And I will say, you know, when you did come through Salt Lake, we met up at a restaurant and I had all my kids and I think it was, I don't know, a Chuck-a-Rama or Golden Corral.

00:18:41.650 --> 00:18:43.920
Some type of buffet and you had your own room.

00:18:44.279 --> 00:18:49.259
So I'm like holding my kids' hands, trying to get them from just totally devouring the food.

00:18:49.260 --> 00:18:50.759
And you know, I'm like, Oh, we've got to find our people.

00:18:50.849 --> 00:18:51.599
We got to find our people.

00:18:51.601 --> 00:18:56.700
And then I walk into this big room filled with Community of Christ youth and leaders.

00:18:57.180 --> 00:19:03.180
And it just felt so cool to see that many youth in the middle of Salt Lake City.

00:19:03.181 --> 00:19:04.829
You know, that doesn't happen very often.

00:19:05.339 --> 00:19:08.690
So it was just a piece of home in your own home.

00:19:08.720 --> 00:19:09.210
It was.

00:19:09.480 --> 00:19:10.950
It was really fun to have you guys.

00:19:11.440 --> 00:19:12.940
Well, and we really enjoyed that.

00:19:12.941 --> 00:19:14.200
It's all like, it was kind of funny.

00:19:14.201 --> 00:19:16.089
Ron, you know, said, go to Salt Lake.

00:19:16.090 --> 00:19:17.349
It's the booming place.

00:19:17.351 --> 00:19:18.789
It's the happening place.

00:19:18.790 --> 00:19:20.680
It's, it's where you need to be.

00:19:20.681 --> 00:19:23.619
So we went there and then he wanted us to tour the temple.

00:19:23.859 --> 00:19:26.589
The temple lot and we've never experienced that.

00:19:26.590 --> 00:19:29.740
And we had to, um, my husband and I coached track.

00:19:30.160 --> 00:19:32.990
And so we deal with a lot of Mormon track kids.

00:19:33.019 --> 00:19:39.920
We deal, you know, cause we have families, we have their oldest sister to the youngest sister and they go on mission and we keep track of that and stuff.

00:19:40.250 --> 00:19:57.980
So I had a little bit of background of the Mormon faith, but um, when we, um, when we toured the temple, I have to say our kids were so polite, so respectful and um, we gave the, and then, um, everybody had to go to the restroom when we first got.

00:19:58.759 --> 00:20:10.579
So it was just my husband and I stood there with the head of PR and a couple of sisters and a couple of people from PR and they ask us what we were about, you know, and you've got 30 seconds to tell them what you're about.

00:20:11.519 --> 00:20:20.869
And I, and I talked about the enduring principles and the, the one that came out just flew out of my mouth was the worth of all people, the worth of all people.

00:20:21.339 --> 00:20:25.240
And I said, we just really focus on the worth of all people.

00:20:25.630 --> 00:20:36.700
And um, you know, they ask us questions and we had a really nice dialogue, but, but, you know, um, it was, it was very interesting and it was nice and I'm glad we did that and we're glad we went to Salt Lake.

00:20:36.701 --> 00:20:37.720
We really enjoyed that.

00:20:37.960 --> 00:20:43.329
And I always, um, when we're out and about, I try to have the kids wear their Mission Made Real shirts.

00:20:43.329 --> 00:20:45.400
And we had just came from community service.

00:20:45.700 --> 00:20:49.630
We worked at the Catholic community service there.

00:20:50.069 --> 00:21:01.769
There's store storage area where they, um, like if refugees and immigrants come in to the United States, they set them up in housing.

00:21:02.710 --> 00:21:09.759
And so they set them up with a crockpot and a bed and a table and dining room chairs, everything they would need in an apartment.

00:21:10.150 --> 00:21:11.019
And they set them up.

00:21:11.020 --> 00:21:12.099
And so we worked there.

00:21:12.309 --> 00:21:14.289
You couldn't walk into this warehouse.

00:21:15.220 --> 00:21:16.539
It was just a mess.

00:21:16.930 --> 00:21:23.619
And by the time we were done, all the school books were organized, school supplies were organized, the tables were all stacked and stuff.

00:21:23.980 --> 00:21:33.960
And the gentleman that was, you know, the head of it, he said, I can't believe you got that much done in two hours, but we worked really fast and really efficient.

00:21:34.740 --> 00:21:35.069
Yeah.

00:21:35.070 --> 00:21:53.880
Well, and I just remember,'cause you know, the few days that you were here, we would, I would meet up with you in the evening and those kids were exhausted but simultaneously super energized because they're tired because they've been spending all day doing service and yet they're so energized because that stuff gives them life.

00:21:53.940 --> 00:21:56.549
And they wanted to talk and tell about their day.

00:21:56.550 --> 00:21:58.230
And they were joking.

00:21:58.230 --> 00:22:04.950
And I mean, it just, it was such a cool energy to just see the mission initiatives lived out through a group of kids.

00:22:05.190 --> 00:22:08.220
So for me it was really awesome just to witness.

00:22:09.299 --> 00:22:15.210
Well, we're really excited this year because, you know, the invite people to Christ, you know, we have all these kids.

00:22:15.211 --> 00:22:19.079
We have probably 26 to 30 kids coming this year on Caravan.

00:22:19.440 --> 00:22:20.970
Where last year we had 16.

00:22:21.000 --> 00:22:23.039
You think we'd go to Laguna Beach?

00:22:23.130 --> 00:22:32.880
You know, we'd have a big group and stuff, but, um, we never know what the draw is, but it's a lot of kids inviting their friends and inviting their friends.

00:22:32.881 --> 00:22:37.019
And one of the requirements is to attend 75% of church.

00:22:37.319 --> 00:22:45.180
And it doesn't matter that you go to Community of Christ church, you could go to youth group, Young Life, you could go to another denominational church.

00:22:45.480 --> 00:22:49.710
It's just you have to have some type of church life to support you.

00:22:49.920 --> 00:23:03.210
But then some of the requirements too are, you know, um, interview someone in your congregation so they have to go to a congregation or, or at the huddle they have to enter, but interviews somebody over potluck about a mission initiative.

00:23:03.240 --> 00:23:06.119
What is their favorite mission initiative, you know, and why.

00:23:06.121 --> 00:23:17.019
So, you know, they really get down to the nuts and bolts of the church and what we believe in and, and, um, which I really appreciate because sometimes we don't teach that a lot with the kids.

00:23:18.609 --> 00:23:18.849
Yeah.

00:23:18.851 --> 00:23:24.490
So I, I guess, I'm curious, what other requirements do you have to go on caravan?

00:23:24.490 --> 00:23:39.730
Because I, I think that it is important to not just be a passive consumer of an experience, but to really get down and figure out this church that you're going on this trip with and to figure out the beliefs and how you can implement that into your life.

00:23:39.730 --> 00:23:42.069
So what are some of the other requirements for kids to be able to,

00:23:42.460 --> 00:23:47.509
well, when, when caravan first started in Southern Oregon, they had to actually give sermons.

00:23:48.049 --> 00:23:56.630
They had to do home visiting, they had to do tracking, they had to, what was the other, some of the other things, um, that they had to do, but they had to do a lot.

00:23:56.869 --> 00:23:59.900
And we've kind of, we've tailored it to this group of kids.

00:23:59.901 --> 00:24:06.859
So attend the church regularly, interview a priest, go on a priesthood visit, go on a visit, you know, a home visits.

00:24:07.369 --> 00:24:09.200
They get to pick, it's like a menu.

00:24:09.349 --> 00:24:12.859
So they can pick two from this section, two from this section.

00:24:12.861 --> 00:24:19.940
And then they do all three from this section, you know, um, study where we're going, you know, get 10 facts about where we're going.

00:24:19.941 --> 00:24:21.470
So like this year we're going to Canada.

00:24:21.471 --> 00:24:22.490
So 10 facts about Canada.

00:24:22.490 --> 00:24:27.690
We've added research hymns or their favorite camp song.

00:24:27.960 --> 00:24:29.730
You know who, who wrote the camp song?

00:24:29.730 --> 00:24:32.130
Who wrote the hymn, why did they write it?

00:24:32.549 --> 00:24:33.839
What was so special about it?

00:24:33.840 --> 00:24:36.539
Why is it one of their favorite hymn that they like?

00:24:36.900 --> 00:24:38.309
You know, what do they get out of that hymn.

00:24:39.059 --> 00:24:41.670
They also have to participate in church life.

00:24:41.700 --> 00:24:45.569
So they have to do invocations and they have to do offerings.

00:24:45.570 --> 00:24:47.250
And some of them even do testimonies.

00:24:47.940 --> 00:24:54.069
They have, they are required to do a testimony once during the caravan season.

00:24:54.519 --> 00:25:00.730
So the first huddle, you know, we may have three kids offer a testimony of what Christ has done in their life.

00:25:01.170 --> 00:25:06.450
And then by the time we ended up on the trip, it's like, okay, the seniors get first choice guys.

00:25:07.019 --> 00:25:15.599
And you know, we have four or five, six kids standing up and, and testifying their testimony about what's so important about the Community of Christ and their trip.

00:25:15.601 --> 00:25:21.200
And it's not, I really appreciate the kids haven't focused on, Oh, I just like being with my friends.

00:25:21.201 --> 00:25:23.210
I'm just having such a good time being with my friends.

00:25:23.569 --> 00:25:26.730
It's really focused on what God has done in their lives.

00:25:29.000 --> 00:25:39.789
Jody, it seems like so often with youth ministry, uh, and this is my perspective as someone who's only been in the church for five years, but I've been involved in youth ministry pretty much that whole time.

00:25:39.790 --> 00:25:55.539
And there seems to be, I don't know, this, this hesitancy or this fine line between being so church centric, meaning Community of Christ centric and then being just secular or anything goes or you know what I mean?

00:25:55.540 --> 00:26:13.720
There's, there's this fine line that I feel like ministers often have because they don't necessarily want to be fully rah rah rah for Community of Christ all the time and open things up more to um, different, you know, spiritual practices or different theology or whatever.

00:26:13.721 --> 00:26:22.299
But all this to say is it feels like you all have really found a balance where you can pull in Community of Christ identity in a nonthreatening way.

00:26:22.240 --> 00:26:25.509
You don't impose it.

00:26:25.569 --> 00:26:27.819
It doesn't, it doesn't feel forced.

00:26:28.180 --> 00:26:34.000
It just feels like you're taking so many elements of who Community of Christ is.

00:26:34.390 --> 00:26:42.369
And making it very, very practical in a way that I think a lot of youth ministry, and maybe I shouldn't say a lot, maybe this is just Brittany Mangelson youth ministries.

00:26:44.490 --> 00:26:51.480
Sometimes it's just a struggle to know how to find that balance when you're planning camps or even teaching Sunday school.

00:26:51.480 --> 00:26:58.289
You know, just finding that balance of being who we are unapologetically and yet not making it all about us.

00:26:58.290 --> 00:27:03.529
I guess what I'm trying to say is it feels like you have found pretty good balance in that.

00:27:05.099 --> 00:27:13.950
Probably because I didn't come from, I, you know, I was a convert to the church so I really am open to other religions and other practices.

00:27:14.490 --> 00:27:21.750
You know, I, I'm the camp pastor at senior high camp and I bring in a lot of music and a lot of visuals and a lot of stuff like that.

00:27:21.869 --> 00:27:23.880
And, and I get the kids to share.

00:27:24.210 --> 00:27:37.319
So, you know, just non-necessary and I try to, you know, the kid that's sitting there in the corner and doesn't want to share about God, you know, maybe he will read a prayer and he'll get something out of the prayer and stuff.

00:27:37.320 --> 00:27:42.009
So, um, you know, it's just, it is a fine line.

00:27:42.339 --> 00:27:57.970
But I think that our values that the Community of Christ and the enduring principles and the mission initiatives really focuses in and especially to these high school kids, when you talk worth of all persons, all are called sacredness of creation.

00:27:58.089 --> 00:28:00.069
Those are all things that the kids are focusing on.

00:28:00.339 --> 00:28:05.380
The kids are in tune to that and they can, they can grab hold of that and they can run with it.

00:28:05.740 --> 00:28:08.829
And so, um, you know, and invite people to Christ.

00:28:09.430 --> 00:28:13.619
Invite people, just invite people, you know, it doesn't mean you have to dunk them.

00:28:15.500 --> 00:28:17.910
Just invite them, invite them to come.

00:28:18.630 --> 00:28:23.279
Um, like I said, some of our kids don't have churches nearby.

00:28:23.519 --> 00:28:31.609
We had one kid last year, drove an hour and a half every Sunday to go to church because he didn't have a home congregation.

00:28:32.059 --> 00:28:40.309
And so we've also given them books to read, you know, books that we think have a good message for them to read and you know, tell us what.

00:28:40.539 --> 00:28:55.789
And then that's their church life, you know, and it, but then they also interview, you know, their congregation may be closed, but an evangelist may live in their congregation or in their hometown so they can go over and they can visit and they can interview that evangelist.

00:28:57.059 --> 00:28:58.799
So that makes it, that makes it really nice.

00:28:58.800 --> 00:29:05.069
We just, you know, it is a balancing act, but I think that, um, and I'm not saying that we do it perfect.

00:29:05.099 --> 00:29:11.490
We don't, but we try really hard to meet the kids where they are and it's become a challenge.

00:29:12.329 --> 00:29:18.930
Um, just with the different things that have been happening with the world and the kids and stuff, you know, and, and, and politics and stuff.

00:29:18.931 --> 00:29:23.400
We try to really keep the peace in the conversation when we're talking caravan.

00:29:24.839 --> 00:29:24.839
Yeah.

00:29:25.039 --> 00:29:25.039
Yeah.

00:29:25.710 --> 00:29:26.250
We just did.

00:29:26.759 --> 00:29:31.710
That's just my husband and I really focus on it is the worth of all people.

00:29:31.711 --> 00:29:32.970
All people are worthy.

00:29:33.299 --> 00:29:41.380
And so we don't need to get into, well you believe this and so you're not worthy or you believe that or, or you do this on Saturdays or whatever.

00:29:42.900 --> 00:29:52.410
Yeah, and I, I really appreciate that, that you allow that room for diversity because I think that if you don't, it would be a huge deterrent to the kids.

00:29:52.920 --> 00:30:03.180
And I also appreciated when you said, uh, our values, our enduring principles, our mission initiatives are things that really resonate with the caravaners.

00:30:03.181 --> 00:30:08.579
And I, I, you know, it, these are conversations that are, already happening that are already happening at school.

00:30:08.580 --> 00:30:12.420
They're already talking about the sacredness of creation and the worth of all people.

00:30:12.839 --> 00:30:19.440
And you know, even like all are called, there's all, there's a lot of conversation about just equality in general.

00:30:19.441 --> 00:30:29.900
And so these enduring principles that we have, they're already being talked about and discussed and lived out with churched and non-churched kids.

00:30:30.319 --> 00:30:41.940
So I just feel like anytime that you can implement those in a way that brings them to community and then brings them to the mission of Jesus is just two thumbs up for me.

00:30:42.720 --> 00:30:43.440
Oh, thanks.

00:30:43.740 --> 00:31:01.589
Well, and it's, it's funny because we have a staff retreat in October and, um, our person that handles the program comes with a program outline and one of the characters in the program is non-binary, you know, it is, these are like superheroes.

00:31:01.859 --> 00:31:09.119
And so, um, we have recyclable man of, you know, um, we have repurposeful man.

00:31:09.121 --> 00:31:12.450
Instead of u m, u h, what's that guy?

00:31:13.589 --> 00:31:21.750
a super anyways, a super power superhero people and they're going out in the world and they're doing the mission initiatives and stuff.

00:31:21.750 --> 00:31:31.210
So, you know, we, we touched a little bit, um, to just make people a little bit aware, a little bit uncomfortable, and I think it's okay to be uncomfortable in church.

00:31:32.019 --> 00:31:32.710
Um, and stuff.

00:31:32.711 --> 00:31:35.259
So, you know, we touched on that a little bit.

00:31:35.769 --> 00:31:41.990
Um, I was trying to think last year there was, there was a scene last year and it was just, you know, let a little bit.

00:31:43.140 --> 00:31:43.140
Mmm.

00:31:43.910 --> 00:31:47.940
You know, made people wonder it made people think and stuff.

00:31:48.180 --> 00:31:54.250
We in our area though and I want to give kudo, our areas are so very supportive to the Caravan.

00:31:54.640 --> 00:32:02.200
We have two auctions, we have one in the Southern area and we have one in the Northern area and people are very, very, very generous.

00:32:02.470 --> 00:32:09.200
They've went on caravan, their grandkids are going on caravan now and so they're just very, very generous with the program.

00:32:09.589 --> 00:32:12.190
And we've been very lucky to, to do that.

00:32:12.191 --> 00:32:20.259
And, and they, they like what Troy and I do and they like the kids being involved and their grandkids being involved and their nieces and nephews.

00:32:20.260 --> 00:32:24.390
So it's just been a really good positive thing for our area and stuff.

00:32:24.630 --> 00:32:26.910
I wish that the church had more of it.

00:32:28.160 --> 00:32:28.160
Mmm.

00:32:28.849 --> 00:32:38.329
I think we're kind of one of the few that, that have it that have a caravan that goes out to different congregations in their areas.

00:32:38.569 --> 00:32:41.390
You know, we've been to Montana, we've been to Hawaii twice.

00:32:41.391 --> 00:32:42.559
We've been to Idaho.

00:32:43.460 --> 00:32:48.500
Oh, a half a dozen times, um, California and probably half a dozen times.

00:32:48.829 --> 00:33:03.420
And we get to meet and what's fun is we get to meet saints and from like, um, Joni Rehose to give an example, she always wants to house us in Sacramento the very first night she has pizza for us.

00:33:03.421 --> 00:33:06.869
We have a pool party and then we go to various homes to sleep in.

00:33:07.309 --> 00:33:11.599
And that was one of the things that really struck me not growing up in this church.

00:33:11.839 --> 00:33:19.259
When I first went on my first um, trip, we showed up at the congregation and they said, Oh, you're going to the Smith's house.

00:33:19.970 --> 00:33:22.009
And the Smith's opened their doors.

00:33:22.010 --> 00:33:25.190
They had snacks for us, they had beds for us.

00:33:25.549 --> 00:33:27.619
They just treated us like family.

00:33:27.621 --> 00:33:33.019
And even you, Brittany, when, when we have the sick, the sick kid, you know, can I borrow your car?

00:33:33.589 --> 00:33:35.119
I need to take this kid to the doctor.

00:33:35.299 --> 00:33:36.680
And it was like, no big deal.

00:33:36.681 --> 00:33:37.369
Yeah, sure.

00:33:38.000 --> 00:33:39.049
Come back when you come back.

00:33:39.950 --> 00:33:42.559
And it's just the Community of Christ.

00:33:42.560 --> 00:33:48.259
We really have a niche on that, that we really love each other and we really take care of one another.

00:33:49.829 --> 00:33:51.509
Yeah, I totally agree.

00:33:51.510 --> 00:34:00.630
And I just always, I know, and I think, and I hope that if I were in the situation where I need some, I would need somebody to borrow a car so they could take me to the doctor.

00:34:00.631 --> 00:34:05.339
I would hope that somebody would offer up their car and I know that somebody would offer up their car.

00:34:05.340 --> 00:34:17.190
So, uh, it is, uh, such a, a great little community that we're part of, which is why I think it's so awesome that these youth are getting to see the larger community outside of their own local area.

00:34:17.309 --> 00:34:26.809
So one thing that you said though, and I totally agree with it, that you wish that there were more caravans like this throughout the church.

00:34:26.811 --> 00:34:37.610
And I know that whenever I hear people talk about caravan, for the most part, it's been things in the past or maybe it's only done every three years or maybe it's just a really small group.

00:34:38.900 --> 00:34:45.199
So I'm, I'm wondering if there are youth ministers out there, maybe they're not even youth ministers.

00:34:45.409 --> 00:34:53.360
Yeah, they just, maybe they just don't know they're youth ministers, but what, what are some of the tips that you would give?

00:34:53.360 --> 00:34:55.639
I mean, what are some of the lessons that you've learned along the way?

00:34:55.641 --> 00:35:02.150
What are some practical tips and tricks of the trade, I guess that you could share with other people?

00:35:02.800 --> 00:35:15.099
I'm very fortunate that I work in a school district and so I have the summers off, but just like last night I spent probably three hours working on the auction at home after work, just working on the auction.

00:35:15.101 --> 00:35:16.989
It takes a lot of time.

00:35:17.170 --> 00:35:21.280
It takes a lot of dedication and you have to have a passion for it.

00:35:21.849 --> 00:35:30.900
So if it's, if you want to just go on a trip, if you want to take a bunch of kids on a fun trip, that's probably not what caravan is all about.

00:35:31.320 --> 00:35:33.659
And so you really have to have a passion for it.

00:35:34.809 --> 00:35:38.369
We, we started writing kind of a manual on how to do this.

00:35:38.789 --> 00:35:46.530
We take off the month of July and we worked from August till June on caravan and we have full time jobs.

00:35:46.769 --> 00:35:49.230
So we don't, we don't get paid by the church.

00:35:48.690 --> 00:35:52.059
We just totally do this as a volunteer.

00:35:52.360 --> 00:36:00.159
But I mean we have in August we pick our staff, in September we pick our leaders and have the leadership retreat in October.

00:36:00.161 --> 00:36:03.789
We have our staff retreat and then we start the ball rolling.

00:36:03.791 --> 00:36:10.179
And then January, February, March, April, May, we have huddles, our retreats, and then we go on the trip in June.

00:36:10.880 --> 00:36:13.849
Then we don't even look at the evaluations until August.

00:36:14.590 --> 00:36:20.050
We put them in a, we put them in a sealed envelope and then we open them up in August and we go from there.

00:36:20.380 --> 00:36:21.969
Cause we take the month of July off.

00:36:23.000 --> 00:36:25.849
So it really takes a lot of time and a lot of dedication.

00:36:27.380 --> 00:36:29.750
You know, it's a love.

00:36:30.639 --> 00:36:34.599
It's, it's a love for the church, a love for the kids and the love for the program.

00:36:36.019 --> 00:36:40.000
I really appreciate that you mapped out over months.

00:36:40.001 --> 00:36:44.500
You know how long it takes to put this on because it's not just surprise.

00:36:44.501 --> 00:36:47.559
We're going to go on a bus and go to these random locations?

00:36:48.010 --> 00:36:50.619
No, there's a lot of intentionality about it.

00:36:51.010 --> 00:36:56.199
There's months of planning, a full year of planning before you actually hit the road.

00:36:56.590 --> 00:37:00.969
And uh, just so many different elements and pieces.

00:37:00.971 --> 00:37:08.019
I mean it, it feels like a giant puzzle and you're just slowly collecting all the pieces for it to come together and making it all work.

00:37:08.719 --> 00:37:11.719
Well, like we have our first huddle next weekend into quality.

00:37:11.900 --> 00:37:20.000
And so Monday evening I will start emailing all the pastors and tell him, okay, we have 26 kids, we have nine staff.

00:37:20.539 --> 00:37:23.690
Can you do breakfast for us on Sunday morning?

00:37:23.869 --> 00:37:26.809
Can you do potluck for us Sunday afternoon?

00:37:27.170 --> 00:37:28.699
Do you want us to sleep in homes?

00:37:28.701 --> 00:37:30.079
Do you want us to sleep at the church?

00:37:30.230 --> 00:37:34.190
It's all those little bits and pieces finding where to get showers at.

00:37:34.400 --> 00:37:36.289
Cause if we sleep at the church, you got a shower.

00:37:36.440 --> 00:37:37.639
I don't like stinky kids.

00:37:37.969 --> 00:37:45.719
So you know, finding showers and um, you know, finding where we could shower, calling the community service agencies.

00:37:45.721 --> 00:37:46.079
Okay.

00:37:46.110 --> 00:37:52.139
We have Monday from nine to 12 that block can you fit us in that time.

00:37:52.170 --> 00:37:54.780
So it's, it really is a puzzle that we put together.

00:37:55.079 --> 00:37:59.280
I really work on the itinerary and my husband really works on discerning on where to go.

00:38:02.369 --> 00:38:04.170
And we make it a teram.

00:38:04.590 --> 00:38:08.400
We've been married 39 years and so we make a great team.

00:38:09.130 --> 00:38:27.369
Well, and I feel like if you've been married that long, but also have traveled on a bus every single summer with a whole bunch of high school kids every year and you still like each other, that speaks to the success of not only caravan, but to your, of your relationship.

00:38:28.460 --> 00:38:38.699
Well, most of the time our anniversary falls when we're on caravan, it's June 20th and we leave June 20th for the trip this year.

00:38:39.519 --> 00:38:41.199
So we, we always laugh about that.

00:38:41.201 --> 00:38:46.179
We never know if we're going to be even at the same church or if we're going to be at the same home that night.

00:38:46.539 --> 00:38:48.039
We just always joke about that.

00:38:48.619 --> 00:38:49.670
Oh man.

00:38:50.119 --> 00:38:52.760
So much coordination, so much sacrifice.

00:38:52.760 --> 00:38:54.980
And to do all this as volunteer ministers.

00:38:54.981 --> 00:38:57.050
I mean that's, that's incredible.

00:38:57.050 --> 00:38:57.920
That's a gift.

00:38:57.920 --> 00:38:58.610
I mean, really.

00:38:58.610 --> 00:39:00.539
That's, wow.

00:39:01.349 --> 00:39:02.070
Well thank you.

00:39:02.099 --> 00:39:02.670
Thank you.

00:39:02.670 --> 00:39:04.500
Well, we, we, we enjoy it.

00:39:06.030 --> 00:39:24.269
You've shared a few stories as we've gone along, but I'm wondering if you have any more stories about where you have seen God show up in Caravan, whether it's the actual week, whether it's the planning and the retreats that happen before or whether it's with the staff or with the kids.

00:39:24.271 --> 00:39:28.170
Just any, any story of transformation that you'd like to share?

00:39:30.199 --> 00:39:38.869
The first year that we went on caravan in 1991 that um, winter one of the youth was killed in a car accident.

00:39:39.110 --> 00:39:41.659
This is kind of a sad story, but it ends in a good story.

00:39:41.661 --> 00:39:44.480
So we didn't know the youth then.

00:39:44.510 --> 00:39:46.099
We were really new to the church.

00:39:46.101 --> 00:39:51.530
We were really new to the situation and we didn't know we were and we were in a church.

00:39:52.130 --> 00:39:53.670
Um, uh, let's see.

00:39:53.670 --> 00:39:58.219
I want to think Berkeley, it was someplace down in California.

00:39:58.221 --> 00:40:02.409
We were in a church and um, we kind of had a meltdown.

00:40:02.590 --> 00:40:03.909
The kids kind of haven't a meltdown.

00:40:03.911 --> 00:40:06.250
They had realized that their friend had been gone.

00:40:06.340 --> 00:40:13.429
You know, she was very involved in the Caravan and she was gone and they kinda, you know, it was mid week, and emotions are kind of running and stuff.

00:40:13.730 --> 00:40:17.579
And so, um, there was a little bit of a meltdown.

00:40:17.730 --> 00:40:21.719
Well, my husband and I really didn't quite know what to do.

00:40:21.780 --> 00:40:23.849
You know, my, my job was games.

00:40:24.210 --> 00:40:29.190
We didn't, we didn't have a close relationship with this young lady, so we just didn't know what to do.

00:40:29.460 --> 00:40:41.530
One of the caravaners walked out to the van to get some gum and walked past a room and a bright light was in the room and two of the girls were being administered to.

00:40:42.750 --> 00:40:42.750
Hmm.

00:40:43.559 --> 00:40:52.530
And she believes that she saw Christ in that room and she came in and just was just like, what's going on in that, that classroom over there.

00:40:53.309 --> 00:40:58.739
And we just happened to know that two young ladies were being administered to, and she said Christ was there.

00:41:00.130 --> 00:41:01.869
So it's just stories like that.

00:41:02.500 --> 00:41:06.219
Um, you know, things that just get changed.

00:41:06.760 --> 00:41:07.690
That was one of them.

00:41:08.409 --> 00:41:13.150
Um, you know, people taking us into their homes and not even blinking an eye about that.

00:41:13.869 --> 00:41:17.050
Um, the long term friendships that you make.

00:41:17.710 --> 00:41:22.730
Um, we went to Hagerman, Idaho and one of the young ladies was in middle school at the time.

00:41:23.030 --> 00:41:35.639
Well she ended up coming and living with us when she went to college in Eugene and is now a priesthood member and is active in the Eugene congregation, you know, and we met her when she was in middle school.

00:41:35.641 --> 00:41:47.949
Her parents, her mom followed us along the trip and did community service with us for a few days in the Idaho area, the Boise Hagerman view, Idaho area and stuff.

00:41:47.951 --> 00:41:53.039
So it's those longterm friendships and that mean a lot, um, to us.

00:41:53.849 --> 00:41:55.380
Uh, try to think about another thing.

00:41:55.889 --> 00:41:57.840
Um, I talked about the baptism.

00:41:59.219 --> 00:42:12.090
Um, administration is a big one when kids ask for administration and we explained it to them and what it is and, and, and, and whether that's kids or whether that's adults.

00:42:12.389 --> 00:42:19.179
We were in, um, LA one year at the LA stake and I, you couldn't get out of the bunks back then.

00:42:19.181 --> 00:42:23.800
They had what they called the log house or lodge house and it was like a bunk house.

00:42:24.760 --> 00:42:26.170
It was perfect for us to sleep in.

00:42:26.530 --> 00:42:28.809
And his back was so bad that he couldn't get out of bed.

00:42:29.579 --> 00:42:30.719
And so we asked for administration.

00:42:31.070 --> 00:42:33.179
We explained to him he was not a member of the church.

00:42:33.539 --> 00:42:40.559
We explained to him what administration was and he, I want that, you know, he was administered to.

00:42:40.561 --> 00:42:44.699
We went about our day and we had a great day, you know, and stuff.

00:42:44.940 --> 00:42:51.000
So it seems like that is, it's also the sacraments of the church serving communion to kids, you know, at a huddle.

00:42:52.139 --> 00:42:58.190
Um, it's been a very highlight of mine, you know, just serving Christ to the kids.

00:42:59.619 --> 00:43:12.599
So, and I have funny stories too, but I mean, when you ask the God stories, you know, um, you know, the, those are, they're not few and far between.

00:43:13.079 --> 00:43:24.769
It's just, there's so many of them that it's hard to pick ones out, but there's been a lot of really dynamic stories that just touch your life and you never forget them.

00:43:25.389 --> 00:43:29.760
Well then there's that we painted the Baker City church three times.

00:43:32.909 --> 00:43:32.909
Yeah.

00:43:32.929 --> 00:43:39.480
Caravan has painted the Baker City church three times in our lifetime.

00:43:40.050 --> 00:43:44.519
And I don't know how many more times it's been painted before that they no longer meet and they sold the church.

00:43:44.521 --> 00:43:51.840
But we always joked about that we would go on, cause we used to do a lot of community services at the churches too.

00:43:52.250 --> 00:43:59.250
And so, um, we call Baker City, you know, is there any project you'd like?

00:43:59.251 --> 00:44:00.780
Oh yeah, would you paint our church?

00:44:01.500 --> 00:44:04.940
And we build storm windows and we did the whole works and steps.

00:44:04.940 --> 00:44:13.050
So you know, we do a lot of them, we kind of joke about that or, or sleeping in the church that, that doesn't have pews or chairs.

00:44:13.599 --> 00:44:21.460
So you're sleeping in the kitchen underneath the dining room table, you know, you're sleeping wherever you can find a little place to put your head.

00:44:23.079 --> 00:44:25.269
That sounds, that sounds wild.

00:44:25.869 --> 00:44:50.039
When I was a teen, you know, I grew up, LDS is, everyone on this podcast is aware of, but we, we did what we call youth conference and the whole youth in my stake ended up sleeping in a high school gym and it was, you know, the girls on one side and boys on the other and half court was the no man's land.

00:44:50.041 --> 00:44:51.360
Like you cannot cross them.

00:44:53.010 --> 00:44:57.510
I don't think anybody got any sleep because there were a lot of kids shoved in there so.

00:44:57.510 --> 00:45:04.500
Well Jodi, is there anything else that you'd like to share with us about Caravan?

00:45:06.329 --> 00:45:08.340
I'm, I'm just trying to think.

00:45:08.880 --> 00:45:11.679
Um, we just really enjoy doing it.

00:45:12.219 --> 00:45:13.719
Um, it brings us a lot of joy.

00:45:14.260 --> 00:45:15.250
It's a lot of work.

00:45:16.019 --> 00:45:31.940
Sometimes things that get neglected at home because of that, I always keep thinking that some little angels are going to come in and, and put the tile down in my living room that needs to get put down or somebody like that, you know, because we really work on it.

00:45:31.969 --> 00:45:35.519
Like tonight, I'll probably work on the auction about a couple of hours.

00:45:36.010 --> 00:45:40.670
And you know, my husband helps me with that and just different things.

00:45:40.670 --> 00:45:43.730
And we did get the trailer, which was really nice.

00:45:43.731 --> 00:46:03.340
We got a trailer to store all the sound system and all the props and all that other stuff that we have, all the sweatshirts that your kids enjoy because it used to be in our house, so we got a trailer and you know, like I said, the mission center has been just very generous and, and supported us very well.

00:46:03.550 --> 00:46:04.510
Very, very well.

00:46:04.869 --> 00:46:13.929
And one time we stayed in our mission center, which got the kids in the Northern area excited about caravan, you know, so we stayed in the mission center.

00:46:14.420 --> 00:46:29.769
Um, one year our mission center president...Troy really decides where we're going, but we always ask our mission center president, is there someplace you want us to go or, or, you know, we asked Ron one year and he, you know, wanted us to come to Salt Lake, which we're really glad we did and stuff.

00:46:29.771 --> 00:46:33.139
So, you know, we give people the opportunity and stuff.

00:46:33.309 --> 00:46:40.900
Uh, Troy does a lot of discerning of where we're going and then, and it's become a challenge and it's kind of a sad challenge.

00:46:41.289 --> 00:46:44.590
Um, a few years ago we wanted to go to Montana.

00:46:44.590 --> 00:46:45.969
Troy said, let's go to Montana.

00:46:45.971 --> 00:46:47.380
We haven't been to Montana in a long time.

00:46:47.380 --> 00:46:52.949
And I go, Oh, well there's a congregation and X, Y, Z, you know, and they had closed.

00:46:53.639 --> 00:46:59.610
So, you know, there was quite a distance between this congregation and that congregation and different things, you know.

00:46:59.610 --> 00:47:13.750
And so, um, it's, it's becoming a challenge on where to go that um, the saints are close together, that they're close together that we can get from one place to the next and you know, in a day or so.

00:47:14.409 --> 00:47:16.989
So, but, but it's a good challenge.

00:47:16.990 --> 00:47:18.130
I like a challenge.

00:47:18.699 --> 00:47:19.210
Yeah.

00:47:19.210 --> 00:47:26.170
Well, and it sounds like caravan in your area has quite the reputation and the longevity.

00:47:26.199 --> 00:47:42.139
Gosh, I think of just all of the changes in the church since the 1960s that always is the, when you're talking about the evolution of the church, you know, the mid sixties is usually where people like to start that conversation of where the church evolved.

00:47:42.710 --> 00:47:51.980
And to know that caravan has lasted through all of those changes and the theological changes and ordination of women and national conference.

00:47:51.981 --> 00:48:04.010
And I'm assuming, you know, just taking a step back, a bird's eye view of this ministry and just seeing how it's continued to be relevant has continued to be an identity marker of who we are.

00:48:04.010 --> 00:48:11.449
It represents who we are and that has changed and evolved alongside the church I think is just remarkable.

00:48:11.570 --> 00:48:16.630
So, Well, one of our pride enjoys, as I said, we develop disciples to serve.

00:48:16.840 --> 00:48:26.309
And right off the bat I can tell, I can think of two pastors that are former Carabvaners within a hundred hundred miles of each other.

00:48:26.429 --> 00:48:33.860
I mean, that's just, that's just, you know, how our, um, congregation are, you know, we've developed these disciples to serve.

00:48:34.130 --> 00:48:39.849
They become pastors, they become priesthood members, you know, um, they became real church appointees.

00:48:40.300 --> 00:48:42.050
You know, they're just, yeah.

00:48:42.110 --> 00:48:44.750
You know, we've developed them to, to serve.

00:48:45.110 --> 00:48:50.480
And that's what that's, and that's another nutshell in, in our churches we are to serve.

00:48:50.750 --> 00:48:56.070
We don't necessarily hire people to clean up potluck after us.

00:48:56.489 --> 00:49:02.820
We clean up the public, you know, we're to serve each other and just as Christ has served us.

00:49:03.570 --> 00:49:04.230
I love that.

00:49:04.231 --> 00:49:15.239
Again, just making our identity relevant and applicable and not just preaching from the pulpit, but actually doing church and doing mission.

00:49:15.630 --> 00:49:17.880
Again, it goes back to your slogan, Mission Made Real.

00:49:19.809 --> 00:49:19.809
Yes.

00:49:19.920 --> 00:49:20.380
And we liked that.

00:49:20.380 --> 00:49:20.840
It was funny.

00:49:21.039 --> 00:49:21.039
Yeah.

00:49:21.059 --> 00:49:22.449
Somebody said we should change it.

00:49:22.989 --> 00:49:23.469
Change the font.

00:49:23.471 --> 00:49:25.420
We never changed the font of the sweatshirts.

00:49:25.929 --> 00:49:34.059
We've never changed the font of the tee shirts and it's just, we kind of came up with it and then, then I think a couple of years, you know, Christ Mission is Our Mission.

00:49:34.659 --> 00:49:40.360
The church came up with that and we're looking at t-shirts this year and on the back we're calling them travel shirts.

00:49:40.360 --> 00:49:53.170
Sometimes when we, because we're traveling over the border, I'm a little concerned about making sure our kids all stay together are identified as a group, you know, so we can get through customs easy and quickly and stuff.

00:49:53.170 --> 00:50:01.840
So we're thinking of travel shirts and on the back putting the lion and the lamb and then Christ Mission is Our Mission, but we would still have and then have something Canadian on it.

00:50:02.320 --> 00:50:04.840
So we're thinking about that stuff.

00:50:04.840 --> 00:50:07.059
But our work shirts, we call them our work shirt.

00:50:07.090 --> 00:50:24.460
The Mission Made Real shirts and you know, when you come in, um, like last year we went into the homeless shelter to feed them breakfast, you know, and when 25 people come in with those shirts that say Mission Made Real, you know, serving you breakfast as you're waking up, a little intimidating, but they were very thankful that we were there.

00:50:25.369 --> 00:50:25.730
Yeah.

00:50:25.731 --> 00:50:33.050
I just think what a great experience for the kids and for the staff and for the community and for the congregations that you're able to visit.

00:50:33.800 --> 00:50:48.340
Again, I know that here in Salt Lake we were really touched and uh, it was really good for some of our seekers to see what's offered in Community of Christ as far as how do we teach our youth about who we are and our identity.

00:50:48.340 --> 00:50:51.559
And, um, yeah, it was really exciting.

00:50:51.081 --> 00:50:53.329
In a nutshell.

00:50:53.331 --> 00:51:04.010
If I was to, and I've been thinking about this, of trying to put something together for congregations that don't know what Caravan is, you know, that these kids are coming in, they're sleeping in our church and we've got to provide potluck for.

00:51:04.909 --> 00:51:06.920
What do you know, what is this all about?

00:51:06.920 --> 00:51:15.079
Is, you know, we put on a program, the kids offer testimonies about Christ in their life and you don't need to put on the potluck.

00:51:15.081 --> 00:51:16.909
We would be happy to cook dinner for you.

00:51:17.139 --> 00:51:19.760
You know, if you're a small congregation, we'll cook dinner for you.

00:51:20.389 --> 00:51:28.159
We'll have the program at one o'clock in the afternoon on a Tuesday versus seven o'clock at night so that the elderly can come out and see.

00:51:28.369 --> 00:51:33.320
All you need to do is sit in a seat and see kids doing Christ's work.

00:51:33.710 --> 00:51:35.000
That's all you need to do.

00:51:35.001 --> 00:51:42.230
So, you know, we really want to encourage the congregations to have us and to not be a burden upon the congregations.

00:51:43.789 --> 00:51:44.449
I love that.

00:51:44.480 --> 00:51:50.599
I absolutely love the collaboration, the intentionality, the coordination, gosh, the coordination.

00:51:50.601 --> 00:51:55.980
That is not something that is has been gifted to me, that skill.

00:51:56.369 --> 00:52:02.519
Being able to coordinate all the meals and all the supplies and I mean, whew, that's just, that seems intense.

00:52:02.521 --> 00:52:06.750
But I really appreciate all the intentionality that has that has gone into this.

00:52:06.751 --> 00:52:15.360
So Jody, I guess if, if somebody has questions for you or they want to learn more, how could they get in contact with you?

00:52:15.969 --> 00:52:26.820
They can email us at caravan@cofchrist- gpnw.org or TroyJody@Comcast.net is easiest.

00:52:30.619 --> 00:52:30.920
Either one.

00:52:30.920 --> 00:52:36.650
And then we have a link on our Facebook page.

00:52:37.280 --> 00:52:39.590
We also have a link on our GPNW website.

00:52:40.820 --> 00:52:43.219
So we have either one, they're more than welcome to call me.

00:52:43.519 --> 00:52:53.610
I would love to see this get started in, um, you know, California or, you know, uh, Idaho or Arizona or someplace.

00:52:53.909 --> 00:52:57.329
And I'd be more than happy to help them, you know, get started and stuff.

00:52:57.539 --> 00:53:05.900
It is a lot of work and so people have to just be prepared to, you know, to not think that, Oh, this is something I can do on Saturday morning, once a month.

00:53:09.170 --> 00:53:14.389
You know, there's a lot of work and the requirements are really a key piece to it.

00:53:15.380 --> 00:53:20.780
We don't want the kids just to get on the bus, cause some congregations pay for their whole kid, their kid to go.

00:53:21.119 --> 00:53:26.670
So they, the kids get a full tuition is paid for and they need to earn it.

00:53:26.670 --> 00:53:32.489
They need to do their requirements, they need to show up at church, they need to interview people about their priesthood calls.

00:53:33.449 --> 00:53:34.800
Um, just different things like that.

00:53:35.780 --> 00:53:38.599
So, but it's great to talk to you.

00:53:38.929 --> 00:53:40.280
Yeah, it's great to talk to you.

00:53:40.280 --> 00:53:46.730
And again, I just love the intentionality of it and, um, I'm just really glad that we were able to have this conversation.

00:53:47.539 --> 00:53:47.960
Thank you.

00:53:47.960 --> 00:53:48.889
And you have a great night.

00:53:49.969 --> 00:53:54.650
