00:01:00.439 --> 00:01:02.869
Welcome my friend to Coffee Connect.

00:01:03.380 --> 00:01:15.260
My name is Linda Booth and I'm a long time minister in Community of Christ having served on the Council of 12 Apostles for 21 years and six years as their President.

00:01:15.829 --> 00:01:31.969
So grab a cup of your favorite brew and sit close because I have a story to tell you about connections, about how God uses ordinary people to transform the world, one person at a time.

00:01:32.989 --> 00:01:37.939
You see, God didn't send Jesus into the world to maintain the status quo.

00:01:38.569 --> 00:01:55.040
God sent Jesus to turn the culture and religious norms upside down and Jesus reached out and brought into the fold, the outcasts, the sinners, the unclean, the marginalized, and the rejected.

00:01:55.849 --> 00:02:07.010
Jesus invited the lion to see the lamb as its neighbor and friend and Jesus challenged the choose to care for Samaritans their natural enemies.

00:02:07.790 --> 00:02:24.770
Jesus welcomed the despise chief tax collector and the prostitute to dine with him even though he was highly criticized by his disciples and others and Jesus showed us how to witness through simple everyday actions of compassion.

00:02:25.490 --> 00:02:38.780
And as a result lives transformed and the world changed one person at a time and we're called to witness like Jesus, one person at a time.

00:02:40.009 --> 00:02:57.680
In a past life, I served as the director of community relations in the Olathe public schools in Kansas and part of my role was to serve on boards of directors such as United Way and help nonprofits with public relations.

00:02:58.370 --> 00:03:04.960
One such was TLC which stood for Temporary Lodging for Children.

00:03:05.560 --> 00:03:13.870
They provided short-term home and emotional and physical support to children and youth whose lives were in turmoil.

00:03:13.871 --> 00:03:21.639
To support a fundraising campaign, leaders asked me to help with a video that would share their story.

00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:30.099
I had the opportunity to sit with several children and teenagers, hear their stories and interview them off camera.

00:03:30.819 --> 00:03:39.610
One olive s kin girl with flowing jet black hair rarely looked up as I talked with her before, the video camera taping.

00:03:40.270 --> 00:03:45.400
This 13 year old had a tablet in front of her on a white piece of paper.

00:03:45.400 --> 00:03:55.750
She was creating with a black ballpoint pen what look like an intricate chain to get to her to get comfortable.

00:03:55.751 --> 00:03:58.810
Before the interview I asked her about her creation.

00:03:59.469 --> 00:04:25.569
She pointed to one line in a corner of the page and she said, look here, this is one person I look more closely and indeed there was a small stick figure line for the body circle for the head four lines extending to represent arms and legs and she said to me, see how this person is connected to the next one and the next one and the next one?

00:04:26.379 --> 00:04:37.360
As I gazed at what I thought was a chain, I saw maybe a hundred stick people join together hand to hand winding around and filling the paper.

00:04:38.079 --> 00:04:43.629
I was amazed that this series of stick people form such an intricate design.

00:04:44.589 --> 00:04:50.620
I was even more amazed when the teenager explained the significance of these connected figures.

00:04:50.769 --> 00:04:57.160
She said,"You see, it starts with one person reaching out to help another person.

00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:10.540
Then that person holds out a hand to the next and it goes on and on until the world is a safe place for everyone." And what she said is true, isn't it?

00:05:10.841 --> 00:05:39.459
You and I are part of an ancient relay of witnesses who followed Jesus Christ and live their witness and powerful story of Jesus', his life, his ministry, and through the power of story, generations of people were invited to follow Jesus because one person shared the story of Jesus, one person at a time.

00:05:40.660 --> 00:05:46.089
Over the years I've been to the Portland congregation in Oregon three times.

00:05:46.899 --> 00:05:52.449
The first was to speak at a Peace Colloquy which engaged members of its community.

00:05:53.019 --> 00:05:57.870
The congregation was small but enthusiastic about justice and peacemaking.

00:05:59.129 --> 00:06:02.790
The second visit was to speak at a homecoming celebration.

00:06:03.420 --> 00:06:10.259
The congregation invited past pastors, church members from other congregations and neighbors.

00:06:10.860 --> 00:06:13.589
I had several responsibilities that weekend.

00:06:13.949 --> 00:06:18.389
The first was to welcome participants at the end of a talent show.

00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:30.209
Like most talent shows, lots of children played the piano, blew on a flute, sang, dance, shared campfire skits and did magic tricks.

00:06:30.750 --> 00:06:39.089
And during the show, I must admit, I rehearsed in my mind an appropriate welcome for the people gathered in the gymnasium.

00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:43.290
When it was my turn, I began to speak my prepared welcome.

00:06:43.560 --> 00:06:53.579
But I instead found myself telling this true story of Gianna, a woman I had met who had made her living as a prostitute in Kansas City, Missouri.

00:06:54.240 --> 00:07:02.250
A short man named Cliff had shared his witness of God's love for her as they leaned against the tailgate of his truck.

00:07:03.029 --> 00:07:05.819
Gianna went home with new hope for her life.

00:07:06.300 --> 00:07:11.459
And in the brief version of this story, I told of her transformation and baptism.

00:07:12.269 --> 00:07:24.750
And as I told that story, I had an out of body experience and I argued with myself and I said to myself, this is not an appropriate story for this audience.

00:07:24.930 --> 00:07:28.319
Stop! Go back to the original welcome.

00:07:28.920 --> 00:07:31.949
But I was in the middle of the story and it was too late.

00:07:32.610 --> 00:07:34.019
I couldn't go back.

00:07:35.009 --> 00:07:40.500
I finished with a welcome to the assembled audience and I was a little embarrassed.

00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:41.670
As I stepped off the stage.

00:07:41.581 --> 00:07:48.509
Waiting there for me was a tall Ebony skinned woman who grabbed me in a tight hug.

00:07:49.019 --> 00:07:54.240
My head was caught between her neck and shoulder and she was crying and she kept repeating.

00:07:54.449 --> 00:07:56.250
That's my story.

00:07:56.459 --> 00:08:03.149
You told my story when she left, I found pastor Murray and I ask him about the woman.

00:08:04.199 --> 00:08:05.459
Her name was Charlotte.

00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:12.689
She lived a rough life and was out on a pass for good behavior from a drug rehabilitation center.

00:08:13.740 --> 00:08:16.920
He said that I'd seen two of her children in the talent show.

00:08:17.189 --> 00:08:27.110
One had played the piano, the other, the clarinet members of the congregation had been taking care of Charlotte's children and were paying for their music lessons, etc.

00:08:28.649 --> 00:08:38.940
Naturally, I wanted to hear why Charlotte and her children were at the talent show and how their lives became linked to the Portland congregation and here's what I learned.

00:08:39.750 --> 00:08:47.730
A teacher in the congregation got concerned when one of Charlotte's daughters was absent from school for several days.

00:08:48.360 --> 00:08:57.490
She inquired in the school office and she learned that Charlotte had been evicted from her apartment and she and her kids were living in a park.

00:08:58.450 --> 00:09:06.549
The teachers began to pray for her student and the more she prayed, the more she knew she needed to do something.

00:09:07.360 --> 00:09:12.309
So on a Saturday morning, she went looking in Portland parks for Charlotte and her children.

00:09:13.299 --> 00:09:20.080
And when she found Charlotte's sitting on a blanket on the grass with her two daughters and a son, she sat with them.

00:09:20.980 --> 00:09:23.289
She listened to Charlotte's story.

00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:25.899
Charlotte's life was a mess.

00:09:26.590 --> 00:09:30.820
She had no place to go and no family to help her and her children.

00:09:31.990 --> 00:09:36.129
The young teacher told Charlotte she had been praying for her and her family.

00:09:36.580 --> 00:09:39.820
She boldly offered to care for Charlotte's children.

00:09:40.120 --> 00:09:51.759
If Charlotte went into drug rehab, Charlotte agreed, and for several months the caring teacher and congregation had been loving and nurturing Charlotte's children.

00:09:52.750 --> 00:10:03.220
I was impressed by the compassion of the teacher and this congregation and I asked pastor Murray to keep me posted on what happened to Charlotte and her children.

00:10:04.090 --> 00:10:10.990
When I got home, I started getting voice messages from pastor Murray on my office phone in the Temple in independence, Missouri.

00:10:11.590 --> 00:10:18.940
The first one shared that Charlotte was out again on a pass, had been invited to church and someone had given her Bible and prayed with her.

00:10:19.899 --> 00:10:32.259
The second one was that Charlotte was out again on a pass again was invited to church and had asked for our envelope so she could give something back to the congregation that had given so much to her and her children.

00:10:33.490 --> 00:10:37.360
Several more messages to update me on Charlotte and her children.

00:10:38.600 --> 00:10:41.379
Charlotte successfully completed the drug rehab program.

00:10:42.610 --> 00:10:47.259
Another, members of the congregation helped her find an apartment and a job.

00:10:48.159 --> 00:10:59.620
Another, this excited message from pastor Mary quote yesterday was Pentecost Sunday and Charlotte and two of her children were baptized and confirmed.

00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:08.169
Two years later, I was invited back to the Portland congregation to ordain pastor Murray and evangelist.

00:11:09.070 --> 00:11:11.169
The congregation was packed.

00:11:11.950 --> 00:11:20.169
I knew Murray's family and I recognize that most of the people packed into the pews or not his relatives.

00:11:21.070 --> 00:11:33.039
When I leaned over to the presider to ask who all those people were, he said that Charlotte had gone out and witnessed to the people and drug rehab and on the streets.

00:11:33.789 --> 00:11:40.570
She told them about a community that loved unconditionally and she invited them into the community.

00:11:41.230 --> 00:11:42.669
And there they were.

00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:58.250
An assortment of people whose lives also were being transformed through the gospel of Jesus Christ and the loving fellowship of ordinary disciples who just love them on conditionally.

00:11:59.330 --> 00:12:00.320
So there you go.

00:12:01.309 --> 00:12:07.549
Stories about how you and I can transform the world.

00:12:08.419 --> 00:12:13.100
It just takes loving one person at a time.

00:12:19.970 --> 00:12:19.970
